I always read / watch / play fantasy media for the setting, the world and the lore more than the plot, and it amazes me how much detail Laura puts into Idhún, it’s amazing! And the first book, even if it doesn’t take part in Idhún, is also really charming :) I only don’t like the romance part of the books as much, I didn’t realized how much of that there is, but it largely makes sense as it being one of the main themes of the plot, it’s just that sometimes it is too much and a bit whiny and brooding for my liking (guess I grew out of it!) Also there is really cool and progressive stuff in there, given that these books were written in 2005-2006, like the legend of Uno and how Domivat explains to Jack that there were men and women that happpened to be born in the opposite sex’s bodies or a part I just read where they were explaining how weddings take place in Idhún and said that they are all valid, being different races, social classes or from the same gender :) Like, Jack also has their bad moments and especially in book 3 it seems like Laura wanted to villanize him to put him at the same level as Kirtash but like, the other one is a fucking cold-blooded assassain for fuck’s sake. And like, in general, yeah there is some stuff that hasn’t aged well, especially how toxic Kirtash (and Jack, but mostly Kirtash) is holy shit.

Okay, about the books, I’m not done yet, I’m in the third one (when Alsan is about to be crowned king, I think that’s when Irial appears right? or was that in Jack and Victoria’s wedding? I can’t remember lol) and yeah the third one is definately the weakest tbh, it’s getting too long for me and yes, i didn’t realized it when I read them when I was little but they are way too young to be having babies. Perfect for establishing that there's tension, some kind of chemistry. It says a lot about both of their characters, good old show-don’t-tell. He's suspicious but subtle, does not hold eye contact for longer than a second, and only doubles back once he's sure she doesn’t watch him anymore. Bloom's reaction in very overt: she's gaping pretty obviously, before getting a grip and shaking it off, continuing as if nothing happened. It gets the point across: there's this quick flash of SOMETHING, and then it’s over, too fast to put your finger on it. At this point I gotta applaud the animation team, btw, because this might not be as elegant as more modern styles, or as smooth as the computer-generated animation from s4 onwards, but it’s incredibly effective.

And boom, for some reason, he meets our beloved protag and local focal point of bad luck. We know Valtor is a powerful wizard at this point, but we don’t know WHO he really is, his role in the grand scheme of things. Maybe even they (the enigmatic ‘they’) could have interrupted normal programming and just played this song/video (depending on if it was radio or TV) then returned to whatever show was on without any further explanation.Instant intrigue. In an alternate reality it would have been interesting for people to have learned about this event from Filter (the band) as opposed to a smiling anchorman with perfect hair.
